"Put a bird on it"

In honor of the Portlandia episode..."put a bird on it."

New Old painting

Hi all - my blog is back in action with a post of a painting I did almost a year ago over the holidays.  It was a wedding gift to our very good friends.  I am still painting, but it is slow going with school.  My goal is to finish another painting over this break.  It's too hot to go outside any way.

First of the New Series

Well, it has been quite some time since my last post. To make it short, I took a long break from painting to find myself and finish the 2009 Chicago Marathon! I start taking classes for occupational therapy in January, and the painting below is the first in a new series. The goal for my new paintings is to create a painting within a painting. The background as an abstract painting and the foreground a detailed painting with line work. Enjoy! See you back here in 2010 with more new paintings. (Hopefully the construction of our patio won't take over my free time too much).

About My Artwork

The landscape of where I have lived has a great impact on my work. On display are paintings that I did while in Ohio, Vermont, and now Texas.  Painting has become a way for me to adapt.  For me, there is no better way to become acquainted with a new environment and culture than to paint it.
In order to gather images from my surroundings I will occasionally paint on the scene and I am always carrying a camera.  My photos are used as a beginning source for ideas on how I would like my style in composition to emerge.
My goals in composition are to make the viewer look and think about the landscape from a different point of view.  To accomplish this I focus on: finding angles that the viewer normally wouldn't notice, use contrasting darks and lights to create drama, and use colors that evoke emotion.
My career as an emerging artist has begun thanks to the support of co-workers, friends, and family.  I look forward to continuing my painting, taking more risks in my artwork, and having many more exhibitions.

BethAnn Bacon

is moving back to Austin, Texas to complete her level II fieldwork to become an occupational therapist after living in Pittsburgh for school. In her free time she paints. Currently, she is painting to raise money to go to Kenya as part of an occupational therapy fieldwork experience for school. A group of fellow classmates plan to volunteer at a girls orphanage and at various OT clinics in the area.

BethAnn received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art with a concentration in painting from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. While attending Wittenberg she experienced the fields of pottery, art history, psychology, and participated in an arts study abroad program at SACI in Florence, Italy. After graduating with honors in her field, BethAnn joined AmeriCorps VISTA and served at a non-profit arts organization, River Arts, in Morrisville, Vermont. BethAnn moved to Austin in 2006 and worked for the Texas Lobby Group and continued to paint on the side. Please view the gallery!
